My name is Robert O’Keefe. I am member of Wisewould Mahony’s Corporate and Commercial Division having joined the firm in January 2008.
I have been in legal practice with various city firms since June 1987 before which I held the position of senior advising officer in the ATO where I had worked for over 17 years in all technical areas of that office.
The main quality I bring to my work is the experience in tax and commercial matters gained from some 30 years in legal practice. This is a quality which is much appreciated by my clients and many accountants who regularly refer matters to me.
Working at Wisewould Mahony provides the opportunity to work for clients on a diversity of legal matters. I provide tax and commercial advice and documentation predominantly to small-to-medium enterprise clients. I am often called on to provide detailed advice on complex taxation matters for clients and their adviser and have regularly acted for clients in relation to ATO and State Revenue Office audits, private ruling applications, tax objections and appeals.
I advise clients on matters related to their Self Managed Supper Funds including advice on compliance issues, audits, limited recourse borrowing arrangements and liaising with the ATO on these issues. I also advise and document matters relating to family and unit trusts, business succession and estate planning.
I enjoy being a lawyer in my area of practice, in particular tax and revenue matters. This area of the law is never static due to constant changes in Government policy, court decisions and guidelines by the ATO and other Revenue authorities. I enjoy meeting the challenges involved in keeping up to date with these changes.
I hold a Bachelor of Laws (Melbourne), Graduate Diploma in Taxation (Monash) and a Bachelor of Business in Accountancy (RMIT). I am Chartered Tax Adviser and member of the Taxation Institute of Australia and a member of the Law Institute of Victoria.
